That's one of my favorite Beefheart tracks. He can seriously do no wrong.
To me, almost all of Trout Mask Replica is jaw-dropping weird. The dissonance, the tempo changes and sound effects, off-beat vocals. Just weird, but entirely genius for 1969.
EDIT: no, you don't have it wrong at all. In retrospect of his entire career, I'd say Captain Beefheart is simply the weirdest musician ever. Strictly Personal I always thought of as his acid album, equivalent to going on a very strange trip without the aid of drugs. I always thought Beatle Bones & Smokin' Stones was an incredibly weird song off Strictly Personal too.
EDIT: that's the best version of it too, vambo number 5, awesome.
