Villa-Lobos’s music is basically original: he never outlined a specific style; what we usually find, is a combination of unusual instruments and voice, use of popular percussions and an effort to merge classical (bachian) forms to the popular musical warehouse of Brazil. In that, a peculiarity he had in common to Oliver Messiaen is the love for birds and their sound, which is used in many aspects and psychological meanings.
The Bachianas Brasileiras were the top of his original vision. Each of the nine pieces has a double name, one specifically classical and one modernly brazilian. It has been regarded as an attempt to create a brazilian version of the Brandenburgische Konzerte.
The most famous pieces are, in fact, the Toccata(O Trenzinho do Caipira, The Peasants’s train), fourth movement of no. 2; the Ária (Cantilena), opening n.º 5, the one you (and I) like so much, written for a soprano and 8 cellos; the Coral (O Canto do Sertão, Song of the Coutryside) and the Dança (Miudinho), both in Bachianas no. 4.
The Trenzinho do Caipira is a masterpiece representing the sound of a train with the orchestra.The Cantilena no. 5 is based on a very correct counterpoint.
Stravinsky’s comment (‘Every time I hear a music I dislike it appears to be by Villa-Lobos’) only confirms how irrelevant he was. Bachianas Brasileiras are one of last century’s best legacies.
